Frankfurt Once Again!

Posted on

Frankfurt! I love Frankfurt. Why? It’s Frankfurt of course. The food is different. Lots of cold cut and lots of meat; all kinds of cookies covered in chocolate. The buns… don’t get me started on the breads and buns. And the weather. Chilly cold with grey skies, the snow and OMG the wind! Brrrrrr… check out our red noses.

So Frankfurt happens every year in January. This would be my fourth trip to Germany. We took SIA and our flight to Singapore was delayed therefore we had to rushed from the gate to gate for our connecting flight. STRESS!

But, fret not. We got ourselves an express buggy which was waiting for us somewhere in the Terminal. The buggy driver was scary. Just zoomed to our gate. Security didn’t even managed to frisk us. We had to run to the plane. AMAZING RUN!

Zooooooming awayyyyyyy!!!

Are we there yet? 12+ hours…

We touched down at 6.30am… it was snowing! Bed of snow welcoming us everywhere. Psst~ Hub’s first snow and it’s quite a massive fall!

Hotel Scala

We stayed at Best Western’s Hotel Scala which was along Schafergasse. It was still too early to check in therefore we left our luggages at the reception and roamed the empty streets.

Zeil – Shopping Street

Little Girl playing in the snow

It’s getting brighter!!! Since MyZeil open its doors at 8am, we took the opportunity to use their free Wi-Fi service. My Zeil offers free Wi-Fi to the public which was a plus. After checking our work and personal emails and of course updated some Facebook postings, we headed back to our hotel which was 3 blocks away. It takes about 5-7 minutes walk to our hotel. Love the walk.

The Receptionist at Hotel Scala

Rooms weren’t ready. Cleaning lady not at work yet so we decided to have breakfast! When I say cold cuts and breads.. I mean what I say…

Yogurt, mixed fruits, nuts, cold cuts, cheese, cereals, etc

Fantastic spread…. all kinds of buns. What else do you need?

Finally, we got our room! I was suffering from a very bad migraine since the red-eye flight so I threw-up don’t know how many times, took a short nap then continued with some sightseeing before work starts tomorrow.

We headed to shopping street again but towards branded street. I’ve got a list of things to buy.. advanced orders by colleagues and friends. So… we went into Longchamp then into Louis Vuitton. Once I’m done with the tasks, we headed to the Opera House which was just around the corner.

The Opera House or also known as the Alte Oper

Winter drying trees in the park

Snow covered path… thank God for the blue sky

We wandered around and found ourselves near a lake. A frozen one at least or perhaps half frozen. I was feeling too adventurous. So, I lowered my leg into the lake then SsssZZZiiiiiii – > CRACK!

Yup! Not entirely frozen at all. Hubby was shaking his head in dismay of what I did. Haha!

Ice-Testing!

It really does look frozen right?

Snow-Tastic

This is the only tree with greens during winter

Brrr… it was freezing! Checkout the flight of birds at the back!

Hungry… and freshly baked fries was number one on the mighty list!

Hubby is savoring on the freshly baked fries! It was delicious and steaming for winter!

As we walked back to our hotel, we took a shortcut or tried to take one and eventually found a beautiful old church which was situated just before the hotel.

We couldn’t find the name of this old church. It does look a bit creepy because of the dull skies but it’s still beautiful and nevertheless historical

The next day after setting up our exhibits at Messe, we took a train and had the walk of our lives looking for the DIALOGUE IN THE DARK Museum. After overjoying from finding the place and being rejected because we didn’t make an appointment for tours in English, we moved along and took shelter in a deli which serves really good sandwiches, salads and coffee. Hmm YUM. What’s winter without a hot cuppa? This place was truly our savior.

Serving the best for the best~

On the last day of exhibition, we took a walk around Romer and Zeil area with Mr Paul Turk. We went into numeral shops, gazed at the windows with its expensive displays, picked and prodded some wooden items, tossed and turned some plates and arrived in Kleinmarkthalle.

Anything that you see here is everything that you want (I want!)

It was an indoor wet market and you can get everything and anything here from clothes to plants to poultry to greens to pickled fruits to stingy fish to chocolates to herbs to sushi bar. We were glad to find this interesting place as we found the best coffee in town and it was confirmed by a guy who so happens to be local; ordering his coffee and speaks perfect English!

Coffee Stop

Frankfurt left us with many memories… snowy ones and I left something in Frankfurt too. My poor boots which is my favorite pair who has been with me since 2009. Poor baby. You lived long enough and travelled far across the world. It’s time to let you go and I still miss you. I’ll never get a replacement like you.

My First Boots… truly missed

FRANK-ly & FURT-ively

It’s another day of flying but this is a long flight but thank goodness we are transiting in DXB. Hoo-ray you’ll know why later. We are off to Frankfurt again for the Paperworld Show which will be held in Messe Frankfurt. This is Hub’s first Frankfurt trip and I just now he’s going to love it. It’s cold cut food every Morgen, BABY!

Cafe NERO

Aaahhhh my love for caffeine has no country-boundaries. I can only find NERO in Dubai Airport which I have to have a cuppa each time I transit there.

Hot Boiling Soup

Never have I ever loved sizzling, boiling, bubbling hot soup ever. Back at home, I never like my soup that spiking hot but this hotness proved a big deal for chilly days. I had ‘goulash’ the tomato based soup whereas Hubs had.. HMM I don’t remember :p

Snow White

This year, I didn’t encounter much snow. The most snow I had ever laid in was in Slovenia. Bountiful of white scenery!

The place we stayed is near The Zeil; a.k.a. shopping street which I don’t make use of. I just love being at The Zeil.

Part of MyZeil

My Daily Grocery Place, 'Galeria Kaufhof'

Trenchilly in Effect

Hubby’s first winter was windy… KAKAKAK

Trenching!

Chilly… my hands are numbed, cheeks are harden and lips are pursed -> free BOTOX (gud)

Schnitzel with Baby Pots, Lemon and Mint Sour Cream Sauce

Craving for something fried but not utterly wholesomely fried. I love the baby pots though!

I think this was the Frankfurt Plate

To me, it looks like different kind of meat chunks in a platter; ham, sausages, pork belly, wieners, etc. Oooo plus mustard of course!

Beef Carpachhio

My first experience of Beef Carpachhio didn’t went too well. I had half and the remaining portion, I switched with Hubs. Lol! But I love the rocket though. They are fresh and kindy minty in a way.

Asian Food in Frankfurt?

It’s not easy to find taste Asian Food in Germany but we managed to walked into one which is just near the hotel we called HOME for a few days. It’s in one of the alley of Zeil and we went there a couple times because it’s not only good but affordable too. See the dishes above? It didn’t went over EURO25 for both of us; and that’s a catch!

Kaktusfeige - My FAV Beer

Kaktusfeige is my staple drink in Frankfurt. Morning, noon and night. Cheaper than H2O itself and it keeps me warm. I miss you, ‘Kaktusfeige’.

A MUST DO in FRANKFURT

So fresh it’s bubbling to the top.. WHEEEEE!

Best EVA Corn Soup

So delicious, Jake and I had to spoon-fight for it. Next time, we will order 2!

OMG check out that poached chicken

Everything was amazing on this dish. The potatoes, the poached chicken which was voluptuously meaty and juicy and poppy. And, no they are not fish fillet though they look like one and the spinach was a nice portion and the sauce was marvelous.

Hub’s Platter is always abundance of protein

Again, I don’t remember what Hub had but it was yummy too because I curi makan his dish. The erm… ‘soft serve’ potato was one of a kind.

So, we truly recommend to come and try this amazing place. Address is:

Zum Bitburger Frankfurt, Hochstraße 54, 60313 Frankfurt

How to get there? I don’t know how to explain but when you see the building below, turn right!

“Oper Frankfurt”

Psst…. pass by the row of branded shops like FERRAGAMO, LV, PRADA, GUCCI, COACH, LONGCHAMP, etc I don’t know what else is there then you’ll find the opera house.

Goodbye Frankfurt; see you 2013

Frankfurt Once More

Posted on

OH yeah… it’s been some time since I’ve halted on blogging. There were so much going through my mind and life that for a minute there; well probably for days, I thought my blog would be shutting down.
There’s just not enough time for me to sit down in front of my lappie and blog; let alone cropping pics and resizing them. I’m leaving for another exhibition later today and finally, I have the time to sit here and start typing (sorry didn’t managed to post them before I left for KLIA -  so this is a week due).
In between packing and tidying, I found the time to re-size some pictures of Frankfurt. Forgive me, I did not fair well in beautifying them. Besides, there were only a few. There’s not much of Frankfurt these days that wowed me besides the food and the cold weather I have to endure.

Anyways, just a short description with ‘points’ of the days I spent in Frankfurt.

  • COLD
  • DRY
  • FOOD
  • CASTLES
  • INFECTION
  • PAPERWORLD
  • ACCESSORIZE
  • JET-LAGGED

There you go… COLD is for the weather. DRY is also for the weather as it was sooo cold that our skin dried up pretty much till it was flaky. Yuck! I know! Therefore, we got ourselves Nivea’s SOS Therapy which cannot be found here :p. And then there was FOOD which was yummy at times, bland at times and what’s with the big portions? CASTLES…seriously, Elaine loves castles. Everywhere she goes, she has to visit a castle. No matter a town away, how high we got to climb, she must visit a castle. By the way, she’s looking for castles with existing bedrooms. She wants to witness how does the bedroom of a medieval era looked like.  For me, I enjoy looking through the ruins and its structure. Now, that fascinates me. And then, there’s INFECTION. Urrgh.. I was actually having coughs and sore-throat while flying. So with the air pressure + the altitude, I googled and found out I was having ‘Otitis Media’. It sounds resonating but I actually thought I was going deaf in one ear. So, I visited the ER, got my consultation, prescription and that’s it. Don’t worry, I’m all fine now. The reason of Frankfurt visit is of course for the PAPERWORLD exhibition. This year our booth was slightly bigger  – YAY! ACCESSORIZE… omg so many Accessorize shops in Frankfurt. I got myself a beautiful necklace and Judith plenty of girly stuff and of course souvenirs for family members. After getting used to the cold weather in Frankfurt, it was time to fly back to Kuala Lumpur. We arrived the night before CNY so it was kinda rush. Then, that’s where the JET-LAGGED comes in. That’s my description of Frankfurt. Photos are below:-

Funicular is coming!!!

Amsterdam –> Frankfurt

Posted on
My sis and I were sent to Frankfurt to attend Paperworld Frankfurt Exhibition. We flew to Amsterdam via KLM 2 days before the exhibition as we planned to go for some sightseeing. Our flight was super full and the flying was pretty smooth. Food wasn’t as par as MAS but service otherwise was one thumb up :) . We arrived at Schiphol Airport just before 7am (12am in KL/-7 hours difference) then took the train to Rotterdam to meet up with sis friend, Jamie who resides with her hubby; who will be our host for 2 days.

SCHIPHOL AIRPORT (underground train)

Train.. where are you? We are freezing!

Better buckle up.. it was really cold and we were only wearing cotton tops when we touched down!

PHEW! Little girls with big luggages

Not even an hour of freezing air and I’m already puffy.

ROTTERDAM

We reached Rotterdam about 45 minutes later. Jamie and hubby, François picked us up. Pity we woke them up while they were still sleeping. They didn’t expect us to reach so early. Anyways, they brought us to their apartment which I really adored… with the view, the layout and simplicity.

TADA! Wall of Coats!

The Dining Area

The Living Area

The Kitchen

Our tiny but comfy Bedroom.. with heater.. WAHAHA!

The magnificent view… overlooking the harbor… I saw:

1) Birds
2) Ducks
3) Ships and,
4) People Making Out

Jamie took leave for the day and drove us to Roermond for shopping. It was about 2 hours away by car from Rotterdam and on the way… I saw beds of snow.

Scary sight…..

I put on UGG boots to keep my feet warm and the UGGs’ kept falling down…. aarggh

The parking lot at our destination

Rows and rows of designer labels.. CK, POLO, GUCCI, BURBERRY, FOSSIL, NIKE and some names that I don’t even know. I’m a poor at brands. But, I so wished I had my ANGPAO money that day! I could have scooped up at least a few great bargains!

For lunch, I had PIG Sausages topped with Satay Sauce accompanied by Roasted Potatoes.. they don’t call them PORK.. they called them PIG instead.

After spending half a day at Roermond, we drove back to Rotterdam to do some grocery shopping. KNOPPERS galore!

See these 2 ladies walking so fast… Jamie on the left and Elaine on the right… I’m always at the back trying to catch up.

For dinner, we had Salmon Spaghetti.. sauce prepped by François before he left to Frankfurt for a business meeting… THANK YOU François. Your dish fed me well

Then the next day, my sis planned out the activities for the day. We took trains to Amsterdam to Anne Frank’s House, we did some shopping and went for scenery seeing. I lost my black and gray shawl to the winds of Netherlands.

My breakfast… Hazelnut filling Cinnamon Bun with Chocomel Milk.

This is Chocomel… Mocha Chocolate Milk.. yummy

WELCOME TO AMSTERDAM

ANNE FRANK HOUSE

Spot the 3rd Floor of the building.. this was where Anne Frank and her family hid during the war with the help of Miep Gies

I got Hubby a ZARA Cap as a souvenir! He effin’ lurve’ it!

We had Dutch Pancake which I topped with TABASCO® sauce to kill the cold. We ordered one each… couldn’t finish all… but, we dug up the fillings and ate them!

Funny that here in Amsterdam, you find more men in the kitchen than women… Men are much more friendlier than the ladies here.. this gentlemen had been to Malaysia 15 years ago. He will visit Malaysia soon… this time with his family probably 5 years later.

Lots of things are huge here.. statement making huge

BEHOLD!!!

I also got to ‘walked by’ the SEX MUSEUM… I wished I had more time to visit the museum because I heard there was a section about ‘The Evolving of Penis’. I never really quite ponder on this topic but now that I know, I do think if the size and shape changed from THEN and NOW?

How about some sex candies? Perhaps Dick Stick or maybe Choco Butt or something perkier like Milky Big Boobs. They’re all safe to eat but not safe to hold..

SLOTEN

After a tour of the city, we took the train towards the west of Amsterdam to Zaandijk where the Dutch windmills are…

The view was magnificent.. even though it was snowing heavily, we were able to cross the newly built bridge to the village of Zaanse Schans .

The sky was so beautiful.. this was one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen.

I simply caught a picture of Elaine when she crossed over ‘to the other side’… she blends well with the white bubble jacket and clouds, doesn’t she?

The temperature was really cold.. I’m not lying.. even the lakes were icy.

…. including the streams….

Poor birdy has no where to go…

And, it was windy while it snowed. Elaine opened her umbrella to the strong winds which resulted in this…. WAHAHA!

CHEESE here we come!

Then, we visited the cheese factory.. there was no demonstration though

The clogs factory.. different sizes and shapes and patterns.. you have cartoons to animals to flower prints to furry ones. We didn’t get any human size clogs but were did get little cloggies as souvenirs for all and also these…

After a long walk back to the train station, we arrived back at Rotterdam about 5pm to meet up with Jamie for dinner. She booked a table at a popular South African Restaurant. But, before I nibbled on new flavors, I tried out the ‘Food On The Wall’.

It was freaking delicious.. I chose Satay again. OMG the best snack food ever!!!

hotel BAZAAR

Sis with Jamie

Super big dishes for 3 little girls

Soon, François join us for dinner after he touched down from Frankfurt.

François & Jamie
What a cute couple!

The food was different… was great for sharing.. atmosphere was pretty loud.. but we had to shout to converse… and I love the lights.. bet MOM would too!

THE NEXT MORNING TO FRANKFURT
On our way to Frankfurt via ICE Train

We almost missed our train… the minute I got on the train with my luggage, the doors slide shut… we were panting like mad dogs but was glad that we didn’t missed it our ride.

Yup it’s confirmed we’re going to Frankfurt from Utrecht

Our lunch while on the 3 hours long train ride

FRANKFURT

HELLO FRANKFURT!

HELLO BAD WEATHER!

HELLO HOME

Oh well.. we were really lucky as normal rooms were full… so, we got UPGRADED! Wahaha.. we got ourselves checked into a bigger room complete with kitchenette and living area and a walk-in closet to Elaine’s delight! The walk-in closet was only wide enough for Elaine’s luggage and her. HAHA.

Room 104… can we have this room again if we happen to attend Paperworld 2011? Pretty pur-leese?

Kitchenette… that we so love!

Entertainment corner which didn’t really entertained us because the only channels in English were BBC and CNBC

Our heated up bedroom

Our multi function bathroom

After we checked in, we walked to the nearest train station about 5 mins away from our hotel and headed off to Messe Frankfurt.

Our empty booth only with its shell

The garbage accumulated after we undress our products for display

TADA we did it in 1½ hours… our products were missing at first and it took them about the same time as us unpacking and displaying our goods to find them. So, we wasted 1½ hours which we could have used for shopping. HAHA I was only kidding.

After fretting for our display stuff, it was time for dinner. We stopped one stop before our hotel stop which was at HAUPTWACHE (pronounced as harp-hwa-her) to dine at CAFE HAUPTWACHE

This place has its very own history.. it used to be a militia base then a police station that housed prisoners… but it got transformed into a diner soon after the WWII.

BINDING Beer is YUMMY

My Chamomile Tea but they call it Camille Tea

Hearty Meal of Sausages, Eggs, Potatoes with Sauerkraut

I always love the walk back to our hotel because of this bed of snow which reminds me of Auntie Shirley’s Apple Potato Salad.

FIRST DAY OF PAPERWORLD

What a surprise! We got goodies at our booth. For a period of 4 days, we have an electric kettle which we must return, we have coffee, sugar and creamer, plastic cups and serviette and 6 bottles of mineral water for our composition.

Our first day was practically try to hang on and getting by it.. because of the snow, lots of in-flights were canceled.. therefore many people got stranded.

We had sandwiches for lunch and I had a muffin for Tea Break

And I have chocolates almost everyday

After the first day of exhibition was over, Mr Kenneth Fong from the Interactive Fairs and Trade Management invited us both for dinner at The Australian Bar.

The many faces of Kenneth Fong

Me and sis cosy-ing up……..

…………. with our cups of sparkling homemade lemonade

We called 2 dishes and we shared as the portions were HUGE. We had a slice meat each of EMU, KANGAROO and CROCODILE. Wild meat keeps us warm.

I got to see the BEAR & BULL in action too..

SECOND DAY IN FRANKFURT

Grocery shopping the day before for our daily breakfast!
Yummy sunflower seed bread with Wild Pate and Garlic Pate.
All less than €10.

And we never miss our shots of Vitamin C

This was 8.15am… on our way to the train station

My kids love this picture

Never ever do what I did.. I surely learned my lesson. Snow aren’t fond of naked skin.

Work & No Play

… hehe but there’s time for pictures!

Lunch with Maggi… pasta style

Sis and I had a meeting in Hall 4 with one of our suppliers at 6pm. After cocktails and some finger foods to fill up our hungry tummy, we left the bonding session and headed back to our room sweet room.

Walking on snow isn’t as easy as it looks… since part of them are melting, roads were slippery and I felt we were walking on slushies.

On our way back to the hotel, we ‘tapau’ our dinner from a Lebanese Diner.

Mr. Sifu @ WORK

The owner was so nice.. he also packed us a take-away bowl of salad at FOC. Dinner cost us about €6.

THIRD DAY IN FRANKFURT

8.45am and it was snowing in Messe Frankfurt with gloomy weather

As usual, I have a muffin for tea break… today, we had sandwiches for lunch

On our way back to our hotel.. everyday we braved through the snow

The snow falling got heavier as each day passed.. so, it wasn’t fun being outdoors

-Elaine Poppins covered in snow-

We decided to cook in our room.. we wanted to utilize our little kitchen to the max therefore, we cooked our very own pasta.

Yummy!!! Complete with ham!

Not forgetting a cute bottle of pink wine which costs €2.95

Sis digging in… cannot ‘tahan’ already while I continue to snap pictures

FOURTH & LAST DAY OF PAPERWORLD FRANKFURT

Last Day = Casual Day

Second Lunch with Maggi… affordable and delicious

Most exhibitors started clearing up their stuff at 2.30pm. I heard tapes splitting, boxes crashing and people yapping all the way. Since today was the last day of exhibition, we got off early at about 5pm to do some friendly shopping.

Even the Apple Store was jam-packed with people

Our Last Dinner in Frankfurt and it has got to be a memorable one… because, I had 2 huge pork knuckles seated right in front of me

Ooo… this beer was tasty… it’s called, ‘Kaktusfeige Beer’

My humongous Pork Knuckles which was A-OKAY with Sauerkraut which I’m not a fan of and thank God sis is.. so she helped me with the pickled cabbage.

Elaine’s Sausages HAHA

We did some shopping for ourselves with OUR OWN MONEY and some behalf of friends with THEIR OWN MONEY then hasten back to the hotel.

What I got most out of the evening was my hat decorated with snowflakes… looks like my hat got PIMPED!

THE DAY WE CHILL BEFORE WE LEFT TO THE AIRPORTyup we did all this from 9am-12pm on the same day.

Elena is all geared up for the weather

First Stop :

Saint Bartholomew’s Cathedral

Sis lighting a candle for faith, hope and LOVE?

Second Stop :

Roemer

Big Bear says, “Do Not Touch Me!”

I’m SMOKING COLD not HOT

And… even if it’s still SMOKING COLD, ice-cream is still our beloved friend

After we got everything we wanted, after we ate all the food we can and after 5 days of hard work, we were on our way home via KLM.. we took a Fokker from Frankfurt to Amsterdam at 3.20pm and arrived at Amsterdam Airport at 4.30pm then took the next flight to KL at 8.30pm. It was really tiring during transit as we walked, waited and looked for necessities.

Our Fokker was so tiny that the sky-bridge looked as if it wanted to swallow the plane

Right after we touched down at Amsterdam

This was the hardest thing to look for… the VAT REFUND booth. It took us an hour to find this hiding place. We sweated and oiled and agonized over this period of time. HAHA but we counted ourselves lucky as we got transferred to an earlier flight so thankfully, there was enough time.

GOODBYE FRANKFURT
